MEET JOE
Joseph R. Almand is a lifelong worker, community member, and small business owner who is deeply rooted in Skowhegan. After growing up in a Marine Corps family and moving frequently, Joe chose to build his life here, raising his family and putting down lasting roots in the community.
Joe spent years working as a skilled carpenter, building custom cabinets and furniture with a reputation for precision, reliability, and pride in his craft. Alongside his trade work, he served as a firefighter, dedicating himself to protecting and supporting others in times of need. He has also been actively involved in local organizations, including Main Street Skowhegan, the non-profit Watching Point, and the Professional Firefighters IAFF 4618 .
In 2022, Joe experienced a life-changing accident in the Kennebec Gorge that ended his ability to continue firefighting and full-time carpentry. Rather than stepping away, he found a new way to stay connected to the community he cares about. In 2023, he opened Joe’s Flat Iron Café, a welcoming downtown space built with his own craftsmanship and a commitment to bringing people together.
Joe’s life reflects resilience, adaptability, and a strong belief in giving back. His experiences as a tradesman, first responder, volunteer, and business owner have shaped a practical, community-first perspective. He is committed to supporting Skowhegan’s growth while preserving the character, affordability, and sense of connection that make it a special place to live.
